Hey guys-

It may just be me, but while reading this passage I had such an urge to watch The Sound of Music. I haven't seen it since I was probably Rahel and Estha's age (in this excerpt). Minus the last few pages that take place in the hotel, most of the story is about the family's trip to see the movie. Also, not much happens in today's reading that needs outside knowledge. So, because of this and the fact that I remember very little about the movie, here's some background information about the film, and a biography on Christopher Plummer.

Enjoy!

Just a couple of questions
1. On pg. 90, is there a significance as to why English is said before Malasyian? What does that reflect on Abbilash Talkies' environment?
2. Rahel has been associated with water (washing clothes, drownable eyes, etc) What is the significance to this?

HEY!!!

cadence- rhythmic flow of a sequence of sounds or words

varicose- abnormally or unusually enlarged or swollen

the last word might seem random but it had to do with the title of the chapter "Big Man the Lailtain, Small Man the Mombatti" they use it when they repeatedly translate those words, and then compare it to the singer!!

Hey y'all,

'"Big Man the Laltain sahib (lantern), Small Man the Mambatti (tallow-stick)," an old coolie, who met Estha's school excursion party at the railway (unfailingly year after year) used to say of dreams.'(85) Even though lanterns shine light, there would be no light if it there was no tallow-stick. This quotation furthur emphasizes the importance of the "small things" opposed to the big ones.
(coolie = unskilled laborer and tallow-stick = torch)

'On the next bed, his niece and nephew slept with their arms around each other. A hot twin and a cold one. He and She. We and Us. Somehow, not wholly unaware of the hint of doom and all that waited in the wings for them.' (116) Estha and Rahel have a deep friendship and connection. This quotation is foreshadowing that something bad will happen to the twins in the near future.
